Students will be examined on integrated reporting (IR) for the first time in the accountancy profession when ACCA (the Association of Chartered Certified vat Accountants) introduces it into its qualification from December 2014.
This addition comes as the International Integrated Reporting Council (IIRC) launched its new integrated reporting framework in December 2013. IIRC is a global coalition of regulators, investors, companies, standard vat setters, the accounting profession and NGOs, who have a shared interest in encouraging value creation for the long-term.
Jennifer Lopez, head of ACCA Malaysia, said: Integrated Reporting is set to become the way forward for companies to report their annual financial and sustainability information. Hence, as the development of IR progresses globally, we continue to enhance our syllabus accordingly to ensure vat that ACCA members vat are at the forefront vat of good practice. This means we can be confident that ACCA members vat are complete finance professionals, equipped with skills and knowledge required by employers across all sectors.

ACCA was excited to be a site today for the Martin Luther King Day of Service. It was the 6th year the DeMaria family have participated in the day’s service projects. They came out ready to work at the Athens Community Council on Aging. It was a family day of service as they had 3 generations (shown to the left) making the effort lead by Don DeMaria, Sr. who is 80 years young. The younger Don said it was just one way they could be an example to their children by volunteering and showing the importance service has on entire community. nfe
“It is so great to come out and see such a diverse group and community members of all ages show up. We had our youngest volunteer nfe at 4 and our oldest at 80. It just doesn’t get any better,” stated Sarah McKinney, the Director of Development and Volunteerism at ACCA. The volunteers helped spread mulch in the flower nfe beds, painted lines, arrows, and handicap parking spaces, and created a walk way from Hoyt Street into the ACCA parking lot making street nfe parking more accessible.
The Athens MLK Day of Service centers on the idea of building a peaceful community and is led by HandsOn Northeast Georgia through the collaboration of a steering committee representing Athens-Clarke County government, school district, nfe non-profits, the University nfe of Georgia, and community members.
In its 12 th year, the Athens MLK Day focuses on service projects on the morning of the holiday, when hundreds of volunteers work on sustainable projects such as playground nfe maintenance, site beautification, and landscape restoration throughout nfe Athens-Clarke County. Funding for the projects is provided primarily by Service for Peace and the Corporation for National and Community Service, Athens-Clarke County government, Georgia Power, and Keep Athens-Clarke County Beautiful.

In the weeks before Christmas I was fortunate to be able to drop in for a coffee with Sarah Moffatt and David Jones at ACCA, the Association for Chartered Certified Accountants. Although they have other comms-related roles, Sarah and David make up two thirds of the intranet team at ACCA.
It was interesting to see what progress they had made after six months. What is very clear to me is how important the first few months after launch are in terms of driving lexin adoption. The intranet team is critical in ensuring this happens.
While not many still believe lexin in build it and they will come , some observers believe that social intranets and networks can be launched virally and the need for change management is minimal. While this does happen in some isolated examples where the organisational lexin culture and circumstances are right, lexin I believe most organisations require effective stewardship from the centre for successful adoption and use.
Arthur the intranet was originally launched with an email teaser campaign, and some fun photos of ACCA employees around lexin the globe posing with Arthur-style moustaches. The 31 May is now Arthur Day a Friday was deliberately picked as intranet traffic lexin tends to go up on a Friday afternoon.
Since the energy of the launch, adoption has been steady, with awareness and knowledge varying dramatically from person to person. Maybe we thought people would get it a bit quicker, but we re addressing it explains Sarah.
The team are addressing this by running regular lexin training sessions for users, content managers and stakeholders. As well as specific sessions, they also hold a drop in day once per month in both the London and Glasgow offices, and there is a drop-in online session for markets (global offices). To shore up usage in global offices, targeted Webex sessions are now taking place.
Anecdotally it sounds like the intranet team are doing well with adoption. For example 50% of all staff has voluntarily uploaded pictures to their profiles, a highly respectable figure after six months. The team s interventions have undoubtedly helped lexin this along, for example suggesting people update lexin their phone numbers on Arthur when the corporate telephone directory was down.
Random people profiles are also selected and highlighted on the intranet. When a photo on a profile has not been loaded, a placeholder image suggesting Arthur s moustache is posted. Arthur himself has left messages to suggest that if you don t want a moustache then you should post your own photo!
Different content managers are being encouraged to get people to complete their profiles. The team are also planning to report to their leadership function detailing directorate by directorate on completion rates of profiles. lexin They are hoping this will apply a little more gentle pressure.
Adoption on social lexin tools has also been encouraging. Personal blogs appear under each individual profile and some have been quite popular, for example two employees sharing progess and pictures during Movember. (Notice lexin a recurring moustache theme).
The CEO also does a blog of sorts. She used to send out a monthly email communication but the intranet has replaced lexin this with a monthly video, with a click through to a more detailed written report. Naturally this is a more effective and engaging form of communication, particularly as employees are able to comment..
Community groups and accompanying discussion forums have probably proved to be the most popular social tools. There are about 20 active groups, most of which are open. Themes have included a sales community, those involved in social media and competitive intelligence. Some of these groups had a presence on Yammer which was then migrated over to Arthur prior to launch.
Although the intranet team have a weekly meeting, they have a quarterly meeting which helps to brainstorm and plan for the quarter ahead. This focuses lexin on four main areas: lexin What processes lexin and activities can be moved into Arthur IT developments for Arthur Big campaigns coming up Housekeeping and training needs
There has been some pushback about the information architecture which is task-based. Some support functions thought task-related lexin content should appear under their departmental areas, but the team have been able to stand firm on the navigation.
Arthur appears as a character all over the intranet and even posts occasionally as himself. This makes the intranet more informal and friendly. Having Arthur as a character rather than a person makes him more approachable. He s clearly quite a friendly lexin guy! explains David.

On wordreference the day that the Arthur C. Clarke Award announces a record submission’s list Adele L. Wearing ponders the women’s list released a couple of weeks ago and asks you to be gentle with the judges:
To be honest, after saying yes to writing on the subject of the awards I ve struggled to find what I want to say. It s an award. To some extent these things are about popularity, awareness, wordreference picking through what happens to be submitted. wordreference The best SF of the year could be languishing in anonymity. With so much out there it cannot be assumed that the very best always rises, certainly not in a timely fashion.
After last year the Clarke Awards understandably wordreference wanted to make absolutely sure we all knew that women were properly represented in the submissions. If we get an all male shortlist again this year it s because the quality and sci fi ness (totally a word) of the submissions by female authors just didn t get them there. Still with nearly a third the submissions wordreference being by women I d be a little surprised if none of them get on the short list at all.
I only keep half an eye on awards, although I sub my authors and artists for some of them. I ve also sat on the BFS newcomer panel for the last two years and it s been fascinating. We try so hard, going through the books that are put forward and trying wordreference to ensure no particular area of genre is forgotten wordreference in the selection. Then working wordreference through it and drawing conclusions. The different values people bring to it as judges. Best will in the world it is never going to be anything other than subjective. I loved x because of y, someone else hated it for the exact same reason, a third loved it because of z.
It s interesting too that in the context of judging wordreference you may have to say I love this book best, I love and I am sooo glad I read it and it s marvellous. It s not actually the highest scoring book though. This one I only like actually brings more to the table in many ways, it just doesn t mesh so well with my personal taste. It s technically wordreference better.
I would love to give you a breakdown of my views on the 33 books submitted with female authors. I can t because I ve read exactly one of them. Kameron Hurley s God s War which is a marvellous book I would recommend to anyone whole heartedly. I ve read other books by some of the other writers on there and those I am familiar with I can again fully endorse as well worth your time and money. If these 33 were the whole list it would be a tough job to choose between them I suspect. Knowing the other work of some of those writers and putting them on a mental shelf in my head, I m stumped as to how I would define one as better sci fi than the other.
So my point….eventually, is whatever happens this year, however the short list ends up, whoever wins or drops away from this or any other awards list, consider the job of the judges. It s not easy being a judge and I ve never met one who said I m not interested in what a woman has to say on the subject. Rather in fact, it can be that lost among all the pages, trying to evaluate and assess so many texts the writer can be forgotten completely as the focus is on the work. They are after all judging the books, not the people.
There are many issues wordreference with diversity or the lack it in genre fiction, with people s behaviour and attitudes. wordreference I have written about it myself and would never deny the truth of that. Still, it is deeply wordreference unfair to assume that the happenstance of a single gender shortlist is down to closed minds and bad attitudes in the judges. I suggest, politely, that if you want to see more diversity you start by seeking it out. As far as female writers at least, this list is a good starting point .

As someone deeply involved in promoting women in science and technology via Ada Lovelace Day, and as a SFF fan, I’m very aware of the role of gender in what is a very male-dominated genre. However, as a person with a bit of an analytical bent, I’m also aware of statistics and probabilities.
I felt that last year’s Clarke Award all-male shortlist got a rather unfair reception, as if you have a longlist dominated by men and picked wordreference your shortlist randomly, at some point you’d get an all-male list. A quick glance at past Clarke Award shortlists shows that you actually have to go back to 1988 to find another all-male shortlist. It’s really only a matter of time before another all male shortlist pops up, just by chance.
When we look at problems with gender in SFF, we need to be looking at institutional and systemic problems, not totems like a single all-male shortlist. It’s more asking whether we can encourage more women to write in the genre, or whether we need more publishers to

Changing anaf the places that you work can actually help you recall. Your brain works by spatial connections; so you will naturally remember things based on where you were at the time that you learnt something.
Reducing information that you need to know into something short and sweet will make it easier to remember. If you can, draw funny pictures to complement the information you need to know – again using pictures to remember uses your spatial memory.
Staying awake all night consuming caffeine will not help you learn. In fact, it will do just the opposite. Make sure you get enough sleep as it ensures your brain resets itself and has enough energy to keep up with all that you are learning.
Mobile phones are the worst, especially if you have a smart phone with Facebook or Twitter – turn it off! At the very least put it on silent (turn vibrate off as well) and put it upside down on your desk. If you let things distract anaf you constantly, it prevents you from entering that study zone as I like to call it. Try to prevent, remove and block out any kind of distraction that might affect you while you study .
This is probably the most important thing that you can do for yourself when studying. Put yourself in the right place in your head. You aren t studying because you have to; you are studying because you want to. Figure out why you are doing these exams and why you want to pass. Get yourself fired up to want to pass.

@Adam,i think what they simply mean is when doing practice questions don’t try to make life easier for yourself by referring to your books for the answers but instead make bullet points in answering and refer to your books after your answer is complete.
